There was no attempt from the company to assist with career progression or broadening of skills, despite me incessantly broaching the topic in quarterly reviews. Yes, they pay for you to take certifications, but the ESRI certifications are designed for you to demonstrate you have x number of years hands-on experience in that area. But unless you already call yourself an expert in that area, you can’t get assigned to projects in order to get the experience. Even after you complete relevant training courses, they still have no faith in you to assign you to projects. Unless you have previously worked on relevant projects. Absolute catch 22. And then when your skill base is not wide enough to satisfy them, they make you redundant in the most brutal way possible; no prior warning and your IT access cut off within 2 minutes of being informed. Absolutely the only things this company values are the bottom line, making a profit and keeping the share holders happy. They are currently partnering with other organisations (cheaper labour) to reduce the reliance on having their own staff and reduce costs. Work for them with caution with one eye on the exit door.
